Burgas: the outside bid that won
A Black Sea city with a beautiful park, a small arena, and a genuinely good argument.
The short answer
Burgas is a city on Bulgaria's Black Sea coast and the host city of Eurovision 2027: BNT and the EBU chose it over Sofia on 13 August 2026, with the shows at Arena Burgas on 11, 13 and 15 May.
Burgas is not the obvious choice and its bid is more interesting for that. Sofia would host a competent Eurovision. Burgas would host a memorable one, if it could host one at all.
The city
Burgas sits on a bay on the southern Black Sea coast, with its own international airport and a working port that is the largest in the country. It is a compact, flat, walkable city of a few hundred thousand people, and it is much more pleasant than the industrial description suggests.
The Sea Garden is the reason. A long park along the seafront, running the length of the city centre down to the beach and the pier, and it is genuinely one of the best urban parks in the Balkans. In summer it is the entire social life of the city.
The lakes
Burgas is ringed by wetlands — Lake Burgas, Lake Atanasovsko, Lake Mandra — which sit on the Via Pontica, one of Europe's major bird migration routes. Pelicans, flamingos and storks pass through in numbers that make this a serious birdwatching destination, which is not a sentence anyone expects about an industrial port city.
Atanasovsko is a working salt lake, still harvested, with mud that people come to bathe in.
The coast around it
This is Burgas's real asset. Within an hour:
- Nessebar — an ancient town on a narrow peninsula, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and genuinely beautiful outside peak season when it is genuinely overrun.
- Sozopol — the same idea, smaller, and the one locals prefer.
- Sunny Beach — the largest resort on the coast and exactly what its reputation suggests. Enormous, cheap, loud.
- Strandzha — the mountain range to the south, empty, forested, and the least-visited part of Bulgaria.
The Eurovision bid, honestly
The case for Burgas is television. A Eurovision staged on the Black Sea coast in a Bulgarian summer produces postcards Sofia cannot: an open-air host city, a beach, a genuinely distinctive setting for the interval acts and the postcards. It is a proposition, not just a venue.
